Who are the bad guys?
I’ve become something of a news junkie over the past decade or so and as a result there are certain truths I’ve come to expect from our media watchdogs. Mainly, that Republicans hate workers and Democrats are their savior.
Why just in the last few months the media has convinced me that Republicans hate unions, union workers, old people and all minorities, and that Democrats are the first line of defense for the average working man. Imagine my surprise when I read this today:
House lawmakers voted overwhelmingly last night to strip police officers, teachers, and other municipal employees of most of their rights to bargain over health care, saying the change would save millions of dollars for financially strapped cities and towns.
The 111-to-42 vote followed tougher measures to broadly eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employees in Ohio, Wisconsin, and other states. But unlike those efforts, the push in Massachusetts was led by Democrats who have traditionally stood with labor to oppose any reduction in workers’ rights.
That’s right, the Massachusetts legislature, a Democrat controlled body, voted to strip public union employees of collective bargaining rights!
Who would have thought that could possibly happen? Wasn’t it just a month or so ago that we were treated to several weeks of around the clock coverage of the evil Republicans attempting this very thing in Wisconsin? Didn’t we get to enjoy the sight of an outraged public storming the State House in Madison and refusing to leave? Didn’t we enjoy cursing those evil Republicans as they dominated the news cycle during the entire debate?
Yes, I believe we did!
And now the Democrats have done the same thing with no fanfare, no national outrage, and not much more than a passing mention on the network news.
What’s this world coming to?
